College of Charleston Responds to Tragedy at Virginia Tech

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GEORGE BENSON

The tragic events at Virginia Tech are deeply felt here at the College of Charleston. They echo throughout the higher education community and, indeed, the entire nation. As we keep our colleagues and peers in Blacksburg in our thoughts and prayers, we are humbly reminded of our fragile existence.

Through this unfortunate circumstance, our campus community is brought closer together and linked by a profound concern for the mutual health and well being of our co-workers, fellow students, friends and family. As always, the safety of our campus community is a primary concern; we will continue to use every resource available to keep our community safe.

These tragic events are also a reminder that we all should reach out for help in times of need. Our counseling office is available to students who are in need of support. The walk-in hours are Monday-Thursday, 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Fridays, 12:30-3:30 p.m.

We invite the College community to come together to mourn, to commemorate, and to wish for comfort and solace for the Virginia Tech community. I invite you to join me on the Cistern on Monday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. to pause and reflect.

Events
Commemorative Vigil: Mon, April 23 1:00p @ The Cistern.

FACULTY NOTE: Please offer leniancy to students who may arrive late to class due to this event.

Honoring the College of Charleston Basketball Seniors!

College of Charleston Basketball Seniors in Action
In their final home game, in front of the 3rd largest crowd at Kresse Arena the Cougars' 4 seniors did not have the blow-out victory they wanted, but a "W" is a "W" and there is still a lot of basketball for the Cougars to play before they move to greener fields.

Renardo Dickerson: Nardo only played for 4-minutes, and wasn't able to increase his stats, but he was a dependable presence on the court in transition.
Dontaye Draper: Dontaye went 4-6 from the field, scoring 8-points with 3-boards in his 27-minutes of play.
David Lawrence: David was a rock star for 30-minutes, putting 21-points on the board, hitting 7-13 from the field, 3-4 from the charity-stripe, grabbing 5-rebounds and he was 4 for 8 from behind the arc.
Philip McCandies: Philip was limited to only 5-points, but he played fantastic defense and grabbed 11-rebounds for the College in his 30-minutes of play. He took advantage of the Citadel's pressure-defense, hitting 3 for 4 from the charity-stripe. Philip is averaging 8.3-boards in the last 3-games.

The Rebirth of Cougs

White Smoke?

I started this blog as a forum to discuss and focus on College of Charleston sports-mainly basketball and baseball-but I will do my best to spread the wealth around to the other Cougar team sports and news that I hear coming from George Street. The College of Charleston has the distinction as the oldest Municipal College in America, but we continue to grow and develop into a premier institution for a liberal arts education, as well as a producing pretty tough teams to face on the hardwood and on the diamond. Unfortunately, the College doesn’t get a lot of press-coverage, so that is where this blog will try to find its’ niche.

It is a very exciting time at the College-we just made a big splash naming our new school president, Dr. George Benson and just as big of a splash-in the sporting world-naming Coach Bobby Cremins as our new head basketball coach. You are going to hear a lot about Coach Bobby Cremins for the next few months, so I’ll spare you the intro here. Most people would be anxious having lost their school head basketball coach and school president in the same year, but I was confident that "white smoke" would come out of the Randolph Hall Chimney and everything would be all right.

Will this blog be loved by the folks on George Street? No. Will it be sanctioned by the College? Highly doubtful, I plan on staying true to the principles I learned at the College-questioning authority with raw observations never seems to go over well with administration types, and “the squares” hate seeing pictures of cheerleaders and other miscellaneous forms of pulchritude from the target rich environment of which we live. That door swings both ways, if you want to comment-do it! If you want the CofC Fan to address certain questions or sports articles-send them to me!

Don’t get me wrong, I am here to have fun and I am ready to watch the Cougars kick some ass! Go Cougs!
