Davidson Wins Against the Cougs, but the Cougs Looked Good!

Despite only shooting 25% from behind the arc and 37% from the field, the College of Charleston Cougars looked good tonight against the Wildcats. It seemed as though every time the Cougars started to get things going a media time out or an arrant foul would take place; thus ending our momentum. Did we get robbed by the officials with that last foul called by the zebras to send Steph Curry to the line? Yes, but the SoCon refs are part-time CofC haters and have picked our pockets more than once through the years. But let's be honest, the Cougars will beat Davidson later on in the season, all the Cougars need is for their legs to look a little more conditioned and the shots fall a little better.

Free-Throw Juice
Regardless, the Cougars looked good. Jermaine Johnson (as Goldfinger would say) drank his "free-throw juice", hitting 10-12 from the charity stripe and 3-8 from the field notching 16 points for the game. Goudelock was 10-22 from the field and 2-9 from behind the arc (take the extra dribble before you pull up kid) as Andrew put up 22 points to lead the Cougars in the game. Tony White Jr looked great hitting 4-9 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc. That kid has really come of age this season. Marcus Hammond did the Cougs a solid on defense and was 2-4 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc.

Ball Hawg!
Sure Stephanie Curry scored 29 points but he was off to a slow start in the first half and Davidson suffered trailing the Cougars until the 6 minute mark before the half. The next Wildcat even close to the young ball hog was Will Reauchambeaux (actually it might be Archambault-sorry my media guide is a bit blurred on that one) with 14 points. Stevie "Wonder" Rossiter put up 11 points to become the only other Wildcat with double-digit points.

As we all watched Momma Curry nervously (albeit "she looked smashingly fabulous" as my non-heterosexual friends from Davidson would say) waiting for the time to expire as our beloved Cougars closed in on her son's squad. We also saw something else, North Carolina Hall of Famer and former Charlotte Hornet who kept the "Hive Alive" with one heck of a sweet shot, Dell Curry (aka: Papa Bear) shook his head in discontent as he saw his son's genetically inherited "quick and sweet" released shot over and over. You could read on the jumbo-tron his lips saying, "Pass the ball son, don't be a hog". But alas, his son (who had a few mentionable assists in the first half) was the ball hog for the kids in Davidson red.

The Breakdown
Teams: 1st 2nd  Final
Davidson: 44 35 79
CofC: 33 42 75

Did the "zebras" not know what a foul was? They doled them out on the Cougs but were a bit shy passing them out on Davidson. WTF?

Yeah, whatever that kid with the hideous tattoo was tossing elbows but getting the calls his (their) way. SoCon refs suck zebra junk!

the cougs can definitely hang with davidson. i think they will crush them at davidson later in the season.

The guys looked a bit tired in the 2nd half, but Davidson looked pretty fresh.

Cry, cry, cry... Stop jacking up threes and get a real coach. The refs did not cost you the game.

Does it take double digit assists not to be a ball hog? He had 9... and let's not forget that he's an All-American candidate on a mid-major program. Anyone with that kind of talent would do whatever he could to keep piling up the wins.

get over it... Davidson played like shit at YOUR house and you still lost. Even with food-throwers. As for the ball-hogging, who cares? You're saying that if you had someone averaging 40 points a game that you'd let them pass the ball to people who had less?

that is a nice new gym, though...y'all should be careful not to mess up the floor by throwing all your garbage on it

and how come you only ever write about Davidson? This is more of a Davidson blog than CofC one. Do you only care about CofC sports when they are playing the team you wish you could be like? Write about CofC when they beat Georgia Southern too...

Curry had 9 assists...the entire CofC team had 8. Yes, clearly Curry is a ball hog. If you couldn't win this game with your fans behind you, how in God's name do you expect to win at Davidson? The only cougar worth a damn last night last night was Curry's mom.

"The only cougar worth a damn last night last night was Curry's mom." That is quality stuff man, thanks for the laugh.

We played like crap last night (see shooting percentages) and we still only lost by 4 to a Davidson team at the top of their game.

As for the blog post topics, indeed Davidson has a fair share of posts, but you may notice that as the CofCsports.com progressed, I quit writing about all of the games. In fact, this was the first one I leaned in on all season. Why? Because Davidson is the College of Charleston's main rival.

Davidson is having a succesful run in the Socon and Nationaly just like CofC did in the late 90s and early 2000s. Let the Davidson enjoy it. CofC will be back.

You have to come to our house. Nobody wins there. Tonight was your chance. Oops.

Davidson is CofC's rival like Carolina is NC State's rival.

One way rivalries are not really rivalries.

Oh, and for the guy upthread who thought all the foul calls went one way - please explain then how Lovedale and Allison both fouled out.

We beat you without our best post player. Next time, I expect we'll have to tie one arm behind each player's back.

I would love to see our team play a little defense and get in to some kind of half court set without jacking up the first somewhat open look we get. Both teams played like crap last night. I have to wonder what Cremins is thinking most of the time. The team looks bewildered on offense. Not to mention, the numerous backdoor freebies we gave up on defense. There's no discipline whatsoever on either side of the ball.

As for Davidson, you may have beaten us 11 times in a row and you may have national acclaim, but you live in a crappy little town in the middle of nowhere. So when it comes down to it, we win.

It was nice to see the Cougs keep it close. Was a fun game to watch.

It's a shame to see such nastiness from the winning team's fans in these comments. It's clearly Davidson's turn to make waves in the SoCon. I just wish that it could be done with the same humility and respect, both from the players and the fans, that CofC displayed when it was our turn the spotlight.

It's okay though. CofC is on the up-and-up. Civility and good basketball will coexist at the top of the conference again soon enough!

If you say so. Whatever you're mouthing off about, I guess it's unreasonable to expect people not to be assholes to each other. That's the nature of trash talkin'. For me, it takes the fun out of a good rivalry. Enjoy yourselves!

What you saw was definitely not Davidson at the top of their game. Yes, you're going to get trash talkers from both sides (if these kinds of blogs existed back in the 90's I guarantee there would have been some of the same), but it is a response to complaining about the refs and insulting the team. Which is normal.

While it's true Davidson is in the middle of nowhere, it's worth it to know that we exceed CoC in education quality, graduation rates both in general and for student athletes, basketball, an athlete headed for the NBA...
